Useful Information About Tobago

Located just off the coast of South America, the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago is at the southernmost end of the Caribbean islands. Trinidad is the cosmopolitan, commercial and industrial island and Tobago the quiet, sleepy little sister; the vacation playground for many Trinidadians.

Getting Here
There are several scheduled and charter airlines that offer service directly to Tobago from North America and Europe including Caribbean Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and Condor. Many others offer service to Trinidad. If you are arriving in Trinidad, Tobago Express, LIAT and Caribbean Star offer several flights daily between the two islands. The fare is currently (Dec 2006) TT$300.00/US$48.00 return for the 20 minute flight. Be sure to book your seats well in advance as flights are often sold out during busy periods.

There is also daily sea ferry service between islands, on two vessels. The M/V Sonia takes approximately 5 hours to complete the voyage which The Lynx does in 2½ hours. Tickets are TT$100.00/US$16.00 each way and must be purchased directly from the Port Authority in either Port of Spain, Trinidad or Scarborough, Tobago at least 2 hours prior to sailing time. Get more information about the ferry service from the Port Authority website.

Currency
Official currency is the TT dollar but US currency is widely accepted. Other international currencies are accepted for exchange at banks and most larger hotels. Credit cards and travellers checks are accepted at larger establishments near the southern end of the island but it is wisest to have some cash on hand if you are travelling around the island. Banks are open Monday to Friday but keep in mind that there are no banks in the countryside areas.

Approximate Exchange Rates
• US$1.00 = TT$6.20
• €1.00 = TT$8.00
• £1.00 = TT$11.00
• CDN$1.00 = TT$5.00
